جنجال در کشورهای عربی بر سر انتشار مقاله‌ای با موضوع «چاقی» زنان

از دلایل جنجالی شدن این مقاله، نور افکندن آن بر موضوعی تحت عنوان «شرم از بدن» است که در خاورمیانه (در مقایسه با کشورهای غربی) ریشه‌های بسیار عمیق‌تری دارد و باعث شده به ندرت بتوان دربارۀ آن سخن گفت!

پس از انتشار مقاله‌ای از سوی نشریه بریتانیایی «اکونومیست» با این عنوان که «چرا در جهان عرب، زنان چاق‌تر از مردان هستند»، غوغایی در کشورهای عربی به پا شد.در صدر این مقاله نیز عکسی از ایناس طالب، چهره تلویزیونی مشهور عراقی منتشر شده بود که باعث گردید او از این نشریه شکایت کند.بیشترین انتقادات به این مقاله را می‌توان در شبکه‌های اجتماعی یافت؛ جایی که بسیاری از کاربران، این مقاله را «زن ستیزانه» توصیف کرده‌اند و بطور ویژه به عبارات به کار برده شده در آن اعتراض دارند. از جمله استفاده مکرر از واژه «چاق»؛ چراکه در حالی که این کلمه در بسیاری از رسانه‌های غربی یک تابو محسوب می‌شود، در این مقالۀ بریتانیایی شش بار از آن استفاده شده است.
